There is a delicacy and an uncomfortable sense of voyeurism to this image that shows two brothers, topless and apparently asleep outdoors. In using a long-focus lens, Vermandel gives the impression of being much closer to the subjects than she would have really been. The image is part of a series called ‘Splinter’, which is concerned with capturing aspects of everyday life, drawing attention to them and encouraging the viewer to consider them in new ways. Here, the figure with his back to the camera subtly rests his hand on the other figure’s arm creating a curving composition. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the details of the photograph (who are the figures and where it was taken for example) the tranquillity and vulnerability of their sleep is absorbing.
