Ben Nicholson had been living and working in St Ives since 1939 but this photograph was taken by Vogler around the time she met Nicholson for the first time in 1957. That year Vogler visited London, primarily to organise a trip to India, but she also took the opportunity to research a programme for Bavarian radio about the Cornish landscape. After a friend suggested she visit St Ives she met Nicholson, and following a whirlwind romance, they married. This photograph shows the beginnings of the characteristics that would become typical features of Vogler?s photographic work ? the unusual and abstract composition alongside muted tones of colour.
