Cold Water Basins, White Terrace, Lake Rotomahana
about 1885
- Scottish Art
This photograph was taken in the active volcanic area of North Island. Here the basins made by deposits from the hot springs resemble the man-made cascades of gardens in Europe. This terrace was destroyed by volcanic eruptions in 1886. By this time the terraces had become a tourist attraction, and a few years later an engineer artificially landscaped the site, to recreate the natural wonder.
