Three Young Men Horsing Around

Three Young Men Horsing Around about 1870
Although many of us have a mental picture of the Victorians as dour and uninteresting people, this photograph goes some way to show that they were quite capable of enjoying themselves in the daftest possible way. The boat behind the three men tells us that they are possibly enjoying a day out of the office somewhere on the coast. This image brings to mind Jerome K. Jerome's hugely successful novel, Three Men in a Boat, which was first published in 1889. Like Jerome's characters, the men in this picture are 'things of flesh and blood' rather than 'Poetic ideals'.
