  • Scottish Art
James Spreull was a rich Glasgow merchant at a time when the city was beginning a period of unprecedented prosperity. Before the Act of Union Scottish merchants had been prohibited from trading with England's North American colonies. But after 1707 all restrictions were lifted and Glasgow, further west than any of her rival English ports, began her first commercial boom based on trade in sugar and tobacco. Spreull was a generous benefactor of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in the Highlands and Islands.
