Lady Jean, second daughter of Archibald, Marquis of Argyll, came from a strong Covenanting family but like other aristocratic Presbyterian ladies she made no attempt to dress severely. She wears her hair in the latest style, as well as a fashionable pearl cap also sewn with pearls. She had four surviving children as well as several who died young.
