Head 1953
  • Scottish Art
During the 1950s, William Turnbull produced a series of works which used the head as the starting point for an exploration of line and form. This is a monotype print. In this work, the artist has used balanced and deliberate brushstrokes, like plus and minus signs. Many of Turnbull?s `Head? works were influenced by the artist?s collection of masks from different cultures, and he felt that masks had a great scope for conveying a range of expressions. The sense of equilibrium may be influenced by Turnbull?s interest in Eastern philosophies.
