William Turner 'de Lond' (English, active 1767 - 1828)
Not much is known about this elusive artist, who was sometimes mistaken by his contemporaries for the famous landscape painter J.M.W. Turner. 'De Lond', as he signed his works, must have migrated to Edinburgh from Ireland around 1822. He became known for his views of the city, and in particular for his paintings of the disastrous Great Fire of 1824 in Edinburgh's Old Town. In addition to landscapes and cityscapes, he also painted several representations of ceremonial visits by George IV, including his Grand Entry of George IV into Dublin in 1821.
