Maud Sulter (Scottish, 1960-2008)
Maud Sulter has Scottish and Ghanaian blood running in her veins. She has worked as a writer, a poet, an artist and a curator. Between 1992 and 1994 she was the Principal Lecturer in Fine Art at the Manchester Metropolitan University. Her photographs are usually conceived as a series devoted to a particular theme. The images are accompanied by 'a text which is a poem, which is a fictional account of a character'. Herself a black woman artist, Maud Sulter has done a lot 'to put black women back in the centre of the frame' culturally, historically and socially.
