Perspective View of the Sea Terrace, Showing the Caryatid Portico and Glazed Semi-circular Side Bay
Published 1847
This beautifully printed chromolithograph (coloured lithograph) was based on one of Schinkel's elegant presentation watercolours. The view of the sea terrace demonstrates Schinkel's appreciation of classical proportions and elegant detail in relation to the coastal setting. His quest for a modern style combined ideas rooted in antiquity with contemporary materials and technology. The palace commissioned by the Russian Tsarina, Alexandra Fedorovna, proved too costly to build, but prints made from drawings and watercolours were published between 1840 and 1848.
