Sano di Pietro was a pupil of Sassetta and was one of the leading painters in Siena in the fifteenth century. The design of this panel relates quite closely to other treatments of this theme by Sano – notably to the central panel of a triptych in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Siena – but it is probably a relatively late product of his studio.
