Despite being badly rubbed, this drawing gives an accurate impression of Schiavone’s characteristically sketchy technique. His use of chalk is similar to his use of paint, lightly applied in shimmering, layered strokes that give his forms and figures an ethereal, almost transparent appearance. This figure may represent Apollo as the god of archery, and it relates closely to the figure in a small painting by Schiavone in the National Gallery in London. There are, however, some slight differences between the painting and this drawing. In the painting the archer is shown taking his aim, whereas here, he appears to have already fired his arrow and his right arm has been thrust back following the release.
