For over fifty years, Sander photographed individuals and groups of people in his native Germany, classifying them according to their occupations and positions in society. This lifelong attempt to document the German people resulted in the ambitious project entitled ‘People of the 20th Century’. As testimony to Sander’s aim to show a truthful array of society at the time he depicted those who wore Nazi uniforms as well as those who were persecuted. This is a quiet and calm photograph, taken near the beginning of World War II. It shows a young, fresh-faced German soldier, yet to be scarred by the horrors that were to follow in the next five years.
