Paul Strand (American, 1890 - 1976)
Paul Strand was one of the leading modernist photographers in the United States. Born in New York City in 1890, his early work was either commercial or done in a pictorialist style. A visit to the Soviet Union in 1935 inspired him to produce a series of documentaries on social issues. Around 1943 he abandoned filmmaking to concentrate fully on still photography. In the 1950s he fled to Europe from the constraints of McCarthyism. Two decades of intense travel throughout Europe and Africa followed, resulting in a number of landmark books, including his work in the Hebrides, Tir A'Mhurain. Strand died in France in 1976.
