This captivating photograph shows a worn yet powerful miner in his overalls and helmet. The composition, from the texture of his beard to the worn wall behind, creates a feeling of exhaustion. It is part of a series of photographs taken by Milton Rogovin in Scotland in 1982 as part of his series: `The Family of Miners?. Rogovin photographed the miners of Appalachia for twenty years from the 1960s, and, in the 1980s, received the W. Eugene Smith Award to extend his work to Europe, Asia, South Africa, China, Mexico and Cuba. Many of the photographs he took down the mine shafts in the murky tunnels, but here, due to the restrictions on flash photography in Scottish mines, he was forced to take most of the photographs above ground.
