Typography is central to Ruscha?s work, influenced by his interest in graphic design. His work has been associated with the Pop Art movement in its challenge to the distinction between commercial and fine art. However Ruscha is more interested in books and films and in investigating the effects of words and phrases in visual art. During the early 1960s, Ruscha began to explore the way sounds could be captured in visual terms, in a number of paintings featuring words. This painting explores the connection between sound and image. Instead of being flat, the word is projected and given depth and presence in the picture space.
