Spanish Boys Playing at Bullfighting 1860 - 1861

Phillip started this painting during his last visit to Spain in 1860-61. He did not manage to complete it while in Spain, so it was brought back to Britain unfinished. The Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Arts in Scotland were keen for Phillip to complete it for the Scottish National Gallery, but he died before he had the opportunity. His ideas for the final composition are revealed in his surviving preparatory drawing, which is also in the collection of the Scottish National Gallery (D 3829).

Royal Association for the Promotion of the Fine Ar

A 19th century Edinburgh-based artists' organisation that sought to foster Scottish painting. It supported artists by publishing many volumes of engravings after paintings, particularly of Scottish landscape and history and illustrations of the works of Walter Scott and Robert Burns.
