Born in Ireland, O?Conor spent his working life in France, where he became a friend of Paul Gauguin. This work was painted in Cassis in the south of France and shows the view from the rear of the villa he rented. The paint has been applied very thinly, allowing the canvas to show through and giving the work a light, airy feel.
