Pinched V 1997

Orozco’s ‘Pinched Stars’ were made by pinching together a small piece of wax between his thumb and forefinger. The resulting abstract shapes were scaled up by professional ceramicists and in turn cast in highly reflective aluminium. There is a perverse dislocation between the original gestural shape and the final semi-industrial process of production. Orozco is interested in the “the idea of enlargement of a gesture, the idea of blowing up production”. The twisted and contorted sculptures have a graceful, elegance to them alongside a strangeness that is both natural and fantastic.
