Alexander McCall Smith became one of Scotland’s most popular contemporary writers after the publication of his No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency novels, a series about Botswana’s only female detective. Born in Zimbabwe, McCall Smith was educated there and in Scotland, where he became Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh. His publications include texts on medical and criminal law, as well as children’s books, novels and collections of short stories. He helped set up a law school in Botswana and frequently visits the country. This chalk drawing shows him wearing one of his well-known giraffe ties but not his characteristic wide-brimmed felt hat. McCall Smith lives in Edinburgh and is married with two daughters.
