Rebecca at the Well
about 1750
The painting illustrates the scene described in the Book of Genesis (Chapter XXIV) in which Rebecca draws water from the well at Nahor for Eliezer and his camels, and is chosen as the wife for Isaac, son of Eliezer’s master Abraham. This work probably dates from late in Monti’s career and demonstrates his distinctive ‘neo-mannerist’ style, which was much influenced by contemporary Venetian painting.
