David Livingstone embarked on his mission to find the source of the Nile in 1866. However, he lost contact with those at home for several years and so Henry Morton Stanley was sent by the `New York Herald? to find him. He discovered the intrepid explorer in the town of Ujiji, on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, on 21 October 1871. It was reported that when Stanley found Livingstone, he remarked ?Dr. Livingstone, I presume??, to which the Scot replied ?Yes, and I feel thankful that I am here to welcome you?. This exchange has become famous and carte de visites such as this popularised the meeting.
