Mohun Lal arrived in Edinburgh in October 1844. He had been the companion of the government agent, Sir Alexander Burnes (1805-1841), in Kabul in Afghanistan. After his death, Mohun Lal had 'at the risk of his life entered Sir Alexander's mansion when it was in flames and secured his private papers', and travelled to Scotland to return them to Burnes's family in Montrose. The newspaper report added: 'He has a remarkably pleasant and highly intellectual cast of countenance, and is dressed in a magnificent Hindoo costume'.
