  • Scottish Art
This image was part of a 1982 book and exhibition, 'The Whisky Roads of Scotland'. The subject of the study was whisky manufacture in the northeast. Godwin likes to hint at past events in contemporary scenes - in this case the 'dumping' of malts into troughs for fermentation. The presence of the watchful customs and excise officers brings to mind the oppressive tax regulation from London during the eighteenth century and the often violent resistance of Scottish smugglers to the imposition of a whisky tax.
