Joos van Cleve (Netherlandish, active 1505/1508 - died 1540/1541)
Joos van Cleve combined his direct knowledge of Netherlandish painting with a strong awareness of Italian artistic developments in his elaborately detailed pictures. His refined altarpieces often included portraits and landscapes. Born Joos van der Beke in Cleve in north Rhine-Westphalia, he adopted the name of his place of birth when he moved to Antwerp. He enjoyed considerable success as an artist in Antwerp and also worked at the French court.
