This image is from a series devoted to Scottish rivers, from the Findhorn to the Clyde. For Cooper what he feels about a place is far more important than what he knows about a place. The rock in this picture is a solitary solid object enveloped by darkness upon which are inscribed precise streaks of light to suggest the river flow.
Thomas Joshua Cooper (American, born 1946)
Thomas Joshua Cooper was born in San Francisco. He attended Humboldt State University, California and graduated with distinction from the University of New Mexico in 1972. He was appointed Head of the Photography Department at Glasgow School of Art in 1982. In 1994 he was awarded the Scottish Arts Council 'Artist's Award'. He has exhibited widely throughout the world. Water has featured most prominently in his recent explorations of the elemental forces of nature: 'Where the Rivers Flow' (1997/99), 'The Atlantic Basin Project' (1998) and 'A Review of the Seascape in Contemporary Photography' (1999).
