Stanley Baxter’s variety career started at aged seven when, egged on by his mother, he entertained audiences at church socials in Glasgow’s West End with his impressions of Sir Harry Lauder, Dave Willis and Mae West. In 1959 he moved to London and between 1963 and 1986 starred in his own series of big-budget variety shows and one-off specials for the BBC and ITV. The Scottish press initially viewed Baxter’s move south as an abandonment of Scottish theatre. Baxter’s most well-loved and enduring creation is Parliamo Glasgow, a series of sketches in which he plays the part of a professor demonstrating and interpreting Glasgow patter in the style of a foreign language tutor to great comic effect.
