Anthony Caro (English, born 1924)
Born in London, Caro studied engineering before attending the Royal Academy Schools in London. From 1951 to 1953 he worked as an assistant to Henry Moore, making figurative bronzes influenced by Moore. In 1959 Caro spent several months in the USA. There, he met David Smith, whose welded sculpture inspired him to use industrial metals and welding in his own work. Caro made large, abstract compositions as well as smaller 'Table Piece' sculptures. Through teaching at St Martin's School of Art in London from 1953 to 1979, Caro exerted a major influence on a new generation of sculptors.
