Robert Capa (American, 1913 - 1954)
The Hungarian born photojournalist Robert Capa, shot to public prominence in the mid-1930s with photographs from the front lines of the Spanish Civil War. Circulated widely across western Europe and America in the new illustrated press, Capa's dramatic and engaging imagery transformed war reporting. New light-weight camera technology allowed Capa to get closer to the action than ever before. He died 'in action' on 25 May 1954 when he stepped on a land mine on a remote battlefield in Indochina. Soon after that the Robert Capa Award was established 'for superlative photography requiring exceptional courage and enterprise abroad'.
