William Henry Murray was an actor, known both for his comedy performances and 'character' parts. He was manager of the Theatre Royal in Edinburgh from 1830 until 1848. When Sir Walter Scott was preparing for the visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822 he drew on Murray's expertise for the management of events. This portrait was painted by William Allan who was a close friend.
