Gilbert and George met and studied in London in 1967 and have made only collaborative works since then. This display comprising works ranging from 1970 to 1991 will include an important early magazine sculpture, George the Cunt and Gilbert the Shit, 1970 and bold-coloured works of the 1980s and 90s such as Existers 1984, and Family Tree 1991 and will be complemented by a video work from Tate’s Collection.
The display will be part of Tate Britain’s BP British Art Displays. Since 1970 Gilbert & George have been important figures in the international art world. Working as a pair and presenting themselves as ‘living sculpture’, incorporating themselves into their art, setting out to provoke their viewers, making them think and question conventions and taboos.
