Role playing was a central aspect of many of Warhol?s self-portraits. In 1981 the artist was videoed and photographed wearing various wigs and makeup. The video was produced for `Andy Warhol?s TV on Saturday Night Live?. Christopher Makos, a member of Warhol?s close circle of friends, described the process as a ?Dadaist experiment?The point was not drag itself but the altered image. It had nothing to do with transsexuality. As you can see: no stuffed bras, no artificial fingernails. Only the face is altered?.

Dada

A radical artistic and literary movement that was a reaction against the cultural climate that supported the First World War. The Dadaists took an anti-establishment attitude, questioning art's status and favouring performance and collage over traditional art techniques. Many Dadaists went on to become involved with Surrealism.
