This poster is advertising the ArtExpo fair (an international art event) at the New York Coliseum in 1983. It features two screenprinted images of the Brooklyn Bridge by Warhol. He has incorporated blocks of irregularly shaped colour which, although screenprinted, appear like collaged fragments of coloured paper. The image is especially significant as 1983 marked the centennial celebrations of the iconic suspension bridge which connects Brooklyn and Manhattan.

Collage

An image constructed from found materials, such as photographs, paper or fabric, glued to a surface, sometimes with additional painted or drawn elements. It is an art form particularly associated with Dada and Surrealism.

Icon

A devotional image, usually depicting Christ, the Virgin Mary or a saint, traditionally associated with the Byzantine, Greek and Roman Orthodox Churches. By extension, it is used to denote an important and enduring symbol.

Screenprint

A print made by forcing ink through a screen on which a stencil is placed. Traditionally used for commercial printing, it has been taken up by artists since the 1960s when it was used extensively in Pop art.
