Philips Koninck (Dutch, 1619 - 1688)
Although Koninck produced some portraits and history scenes, he established his name as a painter and draughtsman of panoramic landscapes. These combined naturalistic detail with imaginary vistas, yet always conveying the character of the Dutch countryside. Based in Amsterdam, he was influenced by Rembrandt?s landscapes. Koninck?s financial security, through his ownership of ferry services and an inn, meant that he was not dependent on painting for a living and, therefore, free to pursue his own interests. Cosimo III de Medici, the Grand Duke of Tuscany, bought Koninck?s self-portrait for the painters' gallery in the Uffizi, Florence.
