Giovanni da Pisa (School of Donatello) (Italian, 15th century, active 1440s)
Giovanni da Pisa also known as Giovanni di Francesco was a sculptor and one of Donatello's chief assistants in Padua from 1444-1449. Donatello, the eminent Florentine sculptor, was commissioned to make the high altar dedicated to S.Anthony in the Santo. This included several bronze statues and some bronze reliefs depicting scenes from S.Anthony's life. Giovanni probably helped to model the reliefs and statues in clay and then cast them in bronze. Works in bronze and terracotta attributed to Giovanni himself all reflect the strong influence of Donatello.
