From Sickert to Gertler: Modern British Art from Boxted House

Alice Strang with contributions from Frances Stenlake, Caroline Cuthbert and Dick Chapman

Boxted House in Essex was the home of Bobby and Natalie Bevan from 1947 to 1974. Bobby (1901-1974), the son of artists Robert Bevan (1865-1925) and Stanislawa de Karlowska (1876-1952), was chairman of the advertising agency S.H. Benson Ltd. Natalie (1909-2007), a renowned beauty who modelled for artists including Mark Gertler and Christopher Nevinson, married Bobby in 1947 and together they created an exceptional home at Boxted.

Works by family and friends, such as Walter Sickert, Harold Gilman and Charles Ginner filled the walls of their home and it was a meeting place for artist friends, including many associated with East Anglia such as John Nash, Cedric Morris and Lett Haines. This book celebrates the colourful character of Boxted House, its hosts, guests and their artistic creations.
