The total cost of Portrait of the Nation – renovating the building and re-presenting our collections – is £17.6 million.
We are inspired by the vision and generosity of John Ritchie Findlay, the Gallery's founder. We hope that his exceptional act – the gift of this building to the people of Scotland – will inspire today’s potential donors to help us renew the Gallery, ensuring its future at the heart of the nation for another 120 years.
We have already received generous support of £5.1 million from the Scottish Government and £4.8 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
Our public fundraising campaign has received an overwhelming response, with over £4.5 million raised from individual donors, trusts and foundations before building work even started. This total received a huge boost in 2009 after an extremely generous donation of £2 million from the Monument Trust.
