Our Mission
The National Galleries of Scotland cares for, develops, researches and displays the national collection of Scottish and international fine art and, with a lively and innovative programme of exhibitions, education and publications, aims to engage, inform and inspire the broadest possible public.
The essential elements in our revised mission statement are the collection, knowledge and people.
Our mission recognises that we have a fundamental responsibility to protect and develop our collection. This task is intimately linked to encouraging as many people as possible to use and enjoy the national collection. In our vision, the National Galleries of Scotland is more than just a treasure chest containing magnificent works of art but is a dynamic, user-friendly institution that actively seeks to engage with its diverse publics.
Our Core Values
Excellence: we are committed to quality in all areas of our activity and our services
Innovation: the Galleries should lead rather than follow
Inspiration: a commitment to learning and education is central to the Galleries
Service: as an institution, we are welcoming and accessible
Creativity: the Galleries nurtures talent and invests in people
Integrity: we are open, transparent and dedicated to public service
These values help to define our aspirations and the way we work. The National Galleries of Scotland is committed to the pursuit of excellence in all its activities and services, but is equally dedicated to ensuring that our collection and knowledge are accessible to as wide a public as possible. We respect tradition and are proud of our history, but value creativity and innovation in our efforts to improve our service. We value the contribution of all our staff. We want all who work at the Galleries to realise their potential and are committed to providing the necessary training to help them achieve this.
